To celebrate the wildlife legends birthday, a party will be taking place at the Royal Albert Hall. The event will be broadcasted live and has been organsied by the BBC.
The night will be hosted by Kirsty Young. “Sir David’s gift to the world has been a life spent exquisitely revealing Earth’s wonders to us all. The very least he deserves is a big 100th birthday bash at the Royal Albert Hall. I’m very happy indeed, as the host, to be able to invite everyone to the party," Young told the BBC.
There is a huge amount of entertainment already organised for the party which is taking place on his birthday, May 8th.
In a statement posted to the BBC's Instagram account, they wrote: "Expect some of the most memorable wildlife moments from the BBC’s natural history archive, with live music drawn from David’s most iconic television series, alongside reflections from public figures and leading voices in conservation and wildlife filmmaking."
The BBC Orchestra will perform the scores associated with some of the most unforgettable moments from Attenborough's programmes, including the dramatic snakes and iguanas chase from Planet Earth II, and the powerful wave-washing orcas sequence from Frozen Planet II.
Dan Smith, the lead singer of Bastille will join the BBC Concert Orchestra to perform Pompeii, which was featured in Planet Earth III.
Icelandic band Sigur Rós will perform their song, Hoppipolla. Their song features in 2006’s Planet Earth, “In Iceland we are blessed with a seemingly inexhaustible supply of wild and untamed places. But even here, in the very furthest flung corners of Europe’s largest wilderness, the scars of human industry are visible, the plans for future encroachments, by dam and smelter, legion,” the band said in a statement at the time.
“If lost the Icelandic highlands are not recoverable. Around the world the story is the same; the traffic, literally, going in one direction. Sigur Rós are proud to be associated with Planet Earth II and its all-important mission to hold us rapt in understanding of, and respect for, this endlessly fascinating, utterly surprising and ultimately fragile place we are lucky enough to call home for a short while," the statement continued.
The night will also feature Deadly 60's Steve Backshall and wildlife presenter Chris Packham reflecting on Attenborough's impact on the world.
Alongside live music performances, they will also show footage from the most memorable moments from Attenborough's seven decade long career in television and from the BBC’s natural history archive.
The BBC will also air two other shows to mark the broadcasters 100th birthday. Making Life on Earth: Attenborough’s Greatest Adventure will look into the behind the scenes of the 1979 BBC One series. Secret Garden will feature Attenborough in a brand new series exploring the hidden worlds within Britain’s gardens.
The event will broadcast from 8:30pm on BBC One and iPlayer. Tickets to attend the event are available here.
