Sinn Féin will field a candidate against Michael D Higgins for the presidency. It’ll be the the only major party in the race – after Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and Labour said they’d be supporting the president’s bid bid for a second term.
Party leader Mary Lou McDonald says Ireland’s changed a huge amount in the seven years since the last election. She stated it’d be ‘simply wrong’ to deny younger citizens the chance to have their say.
