Sir Elton John's beloved Watford FC have released a new kit to mark 50 years since the music icon became chairman.

The shirt itself is sponsored by the artwork for the singer's Diamonds hits compilation, featuring his E logo, as well as the print of the lyrics from his hit track, Your Song and the Happy Hornet badge, the club logo from when he first became chairman in 1976.

The shirt will be complimented by silver shorts with E taping running down both sides, with a silver WFC crest on the shorts.

Having left his second spell as chairman in 2002, Sir Elton remains honorary life president at the club, and has also been credited with changing "the trajectory and future of the club forever".

While he was chairman, Sir Elton oversaw Watford's rise from the fourth division to the top flight, which did see them finish runners up during the 1970s and early 1980s. In that time, Watford qualified for Europe, as well as reach the FA Cup final in 1984.

Speaking about the kit, Elton John had this to say.

"My passion for this club has never died, and I'm so proud of this club, ever since I was five years old when we played in blue and there were two rickety old stands", he said. "What can I say? It's in my heart and my soul, you can't get rid of it. The supporters of this club have always been in my heart".

Watford FC have confirmed that their blue shirt and silver shorts will be worn by the players for the first time for their home match against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday at Vicarage Road. They first wore blue in 1959.

The kit was inspired by the colour the Hornets wore during Elton's early days as a supporter.

Back in July, Elton John also celebrated 35 years of sobriety. More on this from Nova here.
