Newgrange looks set to have its widest ever audience on the shortest day of the year.

Fáilte Ireland and the OPW have teamed up this year to live stream the Winter Solstice, bringing it right to your living room.

Once a year, at the Winter Solstice, the rising sun shines directly along the long passage, illuminating the inner chamber and revealing the carvings inside, notably the triple spiral on the front wall of the chamber.

This illumination lasts for about 17 minutes where members of the public gather to watch the rise.

Live streaming will begin at 8.30am on Wednesday, December 20th and can be watched on Ireland’s Ancient East YouTube Channel.

Viewers can watch the magical moments of the Winter Solstice live from Newgrange, 8.30 – 9.15am on both December 20th and 21st, from their home, office, laptop, tablet or phone.

Ireland’s ancient east website is inviting people to tune in:

“This year, you too can feel the excitement as people gather at this world heritage site. Experience the wonder, as out of the morning’s darkness a single ray of light illuminates the passage tomb on the shortest day of the year, marking the end of winter and the start of new life. A few moments of magic… 5,000 years in the making!”
