As Stanley Tucci celebrates his 65th birthday, it's worth looking back at a career that has defied easy categorisation. He’s played everything from caustic fashion editors to TV show hosts, from charming food lover to sinister villain — and he’s done it all with his trademark intelligence, wit, and humility.

Tucci first made waves in the mid-90s co-writing, acting in, and co-directing the indie gem Big Night, a passion project that set the tone for the rest of his career: ambitious, deeply human, and not afraid of more than one talent.

One of his most iconic roles came in 2006, when he played Nigel Kipling, the sharp-witted art director at Runway magazine, in the runaway hit The Devil Wears Prada. Despite the film’s massive success, Tucci has revealed that work dried up soon after: “After The Devil Wears Prada, I couldn’t get a job, and I didn’t quite understand that,” he told Vanity Fair, explaining that he ended up taking roles he wasn’t thrilled about simply to stay afloat.

His career rebounded, though — and with style. In 2009, he appeared in Julie & Julia and then won rave reviews (and an Oscar nomination) for his chilling portrayal of George Harvey in The Lovely Bones.

In the 2010s, Tucci became even more of a screen chameleon. He played the funny, beleaguered dad in the high school comedy Easy A, and later became one of the most flamboyant and unforgettable figures in The Hunger Games franchise, starring as Caesar Flickerman in multiple instalments.

Beyond blockbusters, he showed serious dramatic chops in titles such as Margin Call and Spotlight.

Off-screen, too, Tucci has made a name for himself far beyond acting. He’s written cookbooks, including The Tucci Cookbook, and hosted the BBC-CNN travel show Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy — a series that won multiple Emmys.

His personal life has seen its highs and lows. He was diagnosed with oral cancer in 2017, a challenge he has openly discussed. He also has a big, blended family: he married Felicity Blunt (sister of Emily Blunt) in 2012, and they have two children together, plus three from his previous marriage.

Tucci’s longevity in Hollywood reflects his adaptability. He’s never been pigeonholed — whether he’s playing a cynical fashion insider, a dystopian TV personality, or a loving father figure, he brings a rare mix of elegance and groundedness.

His ability to shift between indie drama, blockbuster franchises, comedy, and even food-and-travel television shows just how much range he has. At 65, Tucci isn’t slowing down — if anything, he’s entering a new, richly creative chapter.

Here’s to many more years of exactly that mix of sharp wit, warmth, and total certainty that, whatever he's doing, he’ll make it unforgettable.
