A street named after David Bowie is to open next week, in honour of the late musician.

Taking place next Monday (January 8), the street ‘Rue David Bowie’ will be unveiled near the Austerlitz train station, instead of a pre-existing one which is being renamed.

This upcoming unveiling also highlights that Bowie’s home country of the UK do not have a street in the singer’s honour.

Bowie Has “a strong link”

Plans to honour Bowie in such a major way were shared by Mayor Jérome Coumet back in 2020, who is a huge fan of the Fame singer.

According to the mayor, this idea came about due to the music icon having such “a strong link with the city of lights”.

This strong link does not only include the countless shows that Bowie performed on these shores in his career, but also his time spent working at the iconic Miraval studio, where he recorded music. The studio is also famously owned by Brad Pitt.

This unveiling will also be celebrated with a special inauguration party, including a variety of photographs and paintings related to the ‘Ziggy Stardust’ star . These will be showcased at the Galerie Athéna until January 14.

While the UK may not contain a street named after Bowie, the singer’s birthplace of Brixton has a famous mural in his honour, painted by James Cochran, an Australian artist.

Last month, Chic co founder Nile Rodgers who collaborated with Bowie, feels that the late music star would have been cast aside in the modern music industry. Find out why here.
