In a move that may already rewrite executive-pay history, Tesla shareholders have approved a compensation package for Elon Musk that could make him the world’s first trillionaire — a milestone that redefines the very meaning of wealth.

On 6 November 2025, more than 75 per cent of shareholders backed the proposal at Tesla’s annual meeting in Austin, Texas, giving Musk the potential to unlock US$1 trillion (roughly €856 billion) in stock and options — if he meets a set of audacious performance targets.

For perspective, it’s almost impossible to grasp what a trillion dollars represents. If you were earning €10,000 every single day, without ever spending a cent, it would still take you around 274,000 years to reach the trillion-dollar mark. Even if you’d started earning at that rate from the day the first humans appeared on Earth, you’d still be a long way off. If you spent 1 million euros of your fortune every day, it would take you 2,700 years to spend it all.

Another way to visualise it: one trillion seconds is over 31,700 years — long before the invention of writing or the pyramids of Egypt. Or, if you stacked one trillion one-euro coins, the tower would reach over 2 million kilometres highenough to travel to the Moon and back almost three times.

Musk, who already tops global rich lists with an estimated net worth between US$470 billion and US$500 billion, thanked investors for the vote of confidence. “I’d like to just give a heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported the shareholder votes… I super-appreciate it,” he said, to cheers of “Elon!” echoing through the room.

The new plan ties Musk’s earnings to 12 major milestones, including pushing Tesla’s total valuation to US$8.5 trillion, mass-producing humanoid robots and robotaxis, and accelerating its transformation from a car company into a global AI and software powerhouse.

Tesla’s board insists the package is a “pay-for-performance” model designed to secure Musk’s leadership for the long haul. As the company’s chair explained, it aims to “foster an environment that motivates Elon to achieve great things through an equitable plan.”

But critics say it’s excessive. Proxy advisory firms, major pension funds and activist investors have branded the payout “unjustified,” arguing that Musk’s wealth and influence already dwarf those of other corporate leaders. “He has hundreds of billions of dollars already in the company, and to say that he won’t stay without a trillion is ridiculous,” one analyst told reporters.

That scale of wealth is why some economists argue that “trillionaire” status has less to do with personal riches and more with symbolic power. Musk’s fortune is tied to Tesla’s share price — and to the investors’ belief that his vision of an AI-driven future will succeed.

From an Irish vantage point, the contrast is stark. In a year when households are grappling with rising energy bills and inflation pressures, the idea of one man potentially becoming a trillionaire feels surreal — a reminder of how global tech wealth now operates in a universe of its own.

Yet for Tesla’s supporters, the vote reflects faith in Musk’s ability to push technological frontiers. “This AI chapter needs one person to lead it – and that’s Musk,” one shareholder said.

If the targets are met, Musk would not only eclipse Jeff Bezos and Bernard Arnault, but his fortune could rival the GDP of major nations — surpassing the combined annual economic output of countries like Switzerland, Sweden, and Ireland combined.

Whether that comes to pass remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: in financial history, no single figure has ever been poised to control so much wealth tied to one company — and the trillion-dollar conversation has officially begun. Some beg the question - should anybody be this rich?
