The Best Things to Do in Dublin on a Rainy Weekend

Rain in Dublin isn’t exactly a surprise, but it doesn’t have to ruin your weekend. In fact, it can be the best excuse to slow down and enjoy the city in a different way. Here are some great spots to check out when Dublin gets wet.

The Irish Film Institute (IFI) in Temple Bar is always a solid choice. You’ll find indie films, old classics and the odd special screening. When the credits roll, you can hang around in the café with a glass of wine or a coffee while the rain does its thing outside.

If art’s more your speed, head to The Hugh Lane Gallery. It’s free, easy to wander, and home to Francis Bacon’s reconstructed studio. Locals tend to forget about it, which is exactly why it’s perfect for a quiet, wet afternoon.

MoLI (Museum of Literature Ireland) is another gem. It’s small, beautifully put together, and always has new exhibitions. The garden café is worth a stop too — sheltered enough to sit out with a coffee even if the drizzle doesn’t let up.

Sometimes though, nothing beats ducking into a pub. The Stag’s Head, Grogan’s and Kehoe’s all hit the spot on a rainy evening. A good pint, a bit of trad in the corner if you’re lucky, and suddenly the bad weather feels like part of the charm.

For daytime, line your stomach with brunch first. Bibi’s in Portobello and Two Pups near Francis Street are both great shouts. From there, you’re close to galleries and other spots to wander without needing to trek across the city in the rain.

If live music is more your thing, The Workman’s Club and Whelan’s are always buzzing. You might catch an up-and-coming band or a surprise DJ set — the kind of nights where you forget it’s even lashing outside.

When you just want something low key, get lost in the shelves at Hodges Figgis, The Gutter Bookshop or Books Upstairs. Grab a new book and settle into their cafés until the weather eases.

Chester Beatty, tucked behind Dublin Castle, is another great option. It’s calm, full of treasures from around the world, and makes you forget you’re only steps from Dame Street.

And if you want to make a night of it, try Token in Smithfield. They’ve got burgers, craft beers and retro arcade games. Or head to PantiBar, which often hosts board game nights and events that are ideal for dodging the rain.

Bad weather might be a given in Dublin, but it doesn’t have to stop the fun. The city has more than enough cosy corners to make a wet weekend one to enjoy.
