U2 guitarist, The Edge has been granted permission for a revamp and extension of his family home in Dalkey.
The plans were approved by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, allowing for the musician to increase the size of and revamp the permitted extension at Sorrento Road by 20%, it has been confirmed.
This also comes after The Edge, whose real name is David Evans, had secured planning permission from the council in December 2023, in order to renovate and build a three level extension to his property at Sorrento Cottage, along the Vico Road and Sorrento Road site, overlooking the Killiney Bay.
According to documentation, the application had said that works started on the site along Sorrento Terrace on March 10 last, which included plans to increase the floor size across the three level extension by 158.7 square metres from 787 sq m to 946 sq m.
The council planner, which gave this plan the green light, had said that it is not considered that the proposed development would impinge on the residential amenity of adjacent properties from overshadowing, overbearing or overlooking appearance.
It was also ruled that the development proposed, would not take away from the character of the surrounding area or have any material impact on Vico Road, Dalkey Architectural Conservation Point or Sorrento Point.
While a third party objection to this development was taken into consideration, it was found that no significant overlooking impacts to adjoining property "and the privacy and amenity of these houses would not be significantly impacted", according to reports in the Irish Independent.
It also said that works would take place at ground and lower ground floor level, which means that the impacts on neighbouring properties would not be noteworthy.
Regarding these plans, once third party submission was made from Michael Sheill of Coliemore Road Dalkey.
He had questioned the planned security measures, include lights and fencing of this property, saying: “Will this property forever, irrespective [of] who lives in it, have/require this level of security?”.
New features are also set to be added to this three level property by The Edge, including a 94 sq m space for “archive storage” that replaces bedroom accommodation, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of U2 as a band.
Other plans include enlarged bathhouse, which would increase from 26.9 sq m to 34 sq m, to accommodate service space. The bathroom would also accommodate the permitted sauna and plunge pool, a new chef’s kitchen and a new gym.
Documentation with this application also revealed that users of this bathroom would have uninterrupted views of Killiney Bay.
The studio element is also maintained as part of this plan, but it will be more open-plan, compared to the 2023 scheme.
ODAA Architectsm who worked on this scheme, said: “the requirements of certain sections of our client’s brief have evolved since the original grant of permission”.
