Few musicians inspire devotion that outlives them. Fewer still spark global mourning on the scale Ozzy Osbourne did. When the Prince of Darkness died on July 22, just seventeen days after his final, triumphant Black Sabbath reunion at Villa Park, the world didn’t just lose a frontman. It lost a fixture of rock itself.
On The Osbournes Podcast, Sharon, Kelly, and Jack Osbourne have now shared what those weeks of grief felt like from inside the eye of the storm. Sharon, still the family’s steely centre, spoke first. “So many people have reached out to us,” she said. “It’s just been overwhelmingly wonderful, everybody’s reaction for the loss of Ozzy. Thousands and thousands of people we’ve never met, and I just want everybody to know that everything that has been sent to us we’ve read, we appreciate.”
Her voice softened. “The outpouring of love has been so helpful to us. I never could have even imagined it to be as helpful as it has been, to know that we are not alone in our grief and our sadness, and that the rest of the world loved him as much as we did.”
Kelly, her father’s mirror in both defiance and wit, put it more bluntly. “I haven’t seen an outpouring like that since Princess Diana died. I didn’t expect it. It wasn’t just the heavy metal community, it was the entire world.”
Jack added his own perspective, grounded and honest: “When you grow up, you wonder what’s gonna happen when your dad dies. But it never crossed my mind that it would impact anyone outside. I didn’t think it was gonna be like it was.” Later, he played a voicemail from U.S. President Donald Trump offering condolences, proof that Ozzy’s reach extended far beyond genre or generation.
Sharon closed the discussion with a truth that cut deeper than any eulogy. “He never took it for granted. He never had any idea how much people loved him, admired him. Even if they didn’t like his music, they liked him. He was just larger than life. He was one in a zillion.”
The family’s words arrive as both confession and closure. For them, Ozzy was husband, father, chaos, and comfort. For everyone else, he was proof that even the darkest performances can come from a heart of impossible light. And as Sharon said through tears, he never quite believed that. But now the world has told him, loudly, lovingly, and forever.
