All St Patrick's Day festivities across the country have been cancelled in response to the outbreak of the Coronavirus.
The government has announced a package of €3bn. to support the HSE, workers who have to take sick leave and businesses hit by the spread of COVID-19.
Many of the resources that had been put aside to deal with Brexit are now being repurposed
Two 200 million euro funds for businesses will be made available to those hit by the downturn caused by the Coronavirus
While a further 430 million euro has been allocated to the HSE
The government has estimated 2.4 billion euro will need to be put aside to provide sick pay for those forced to self isolate and this will be extended to the self employed and be available from day 1 of the leave.
The Dáil may be recalled early to vote on legislation to give those forced to self-isolate immediate access to sick pay.
The Taoiseach will hold a teleconference with other EU leaders tomorrow to discuss what to do about flights from affected areas and how to protect supply chains.
Further advice on other mass gatherings will be issued tomorrow.
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said every resource will be deployed to meet the crisis - even if that means borrowing money or dipping into the rainy day fund. He admitted that as many as 60% of the population could contract the virus:
"What we have seen from other countries and what we have seen from what is available at the moment, is that we could we could easily have 50 or 60% of our population contracting Covid-19.
"For the vast majority of the population this will be a mild illness and may even by asymptomatic. However there will be a significant part of the population who will require critical care.
"A percentage that we don't honestly know yet - it could be one per cent or three per cent - mortality. We just don't know that with any degree of certainty. It is not the kind of thing we have seen in a very long time."
Following a meeting of the special Cabinet Committee on Covid-19 today, the Government has decided on the next phase of Ireland’s response to the global and national public health emergency arising from Covid-19.

Due to the unique nature and scale of the St Patrick’s Day festivities, in terms of size, the mass gathering of local and international travellers, and the continued progression of community transmission in some European countries, along with the emergence of a small number of cases of local transmission in Ireland, the Government has decided that St Patrick’s Day parades, including the Dublin parade, will not proceed. This is based on the advice of the National Public Health Emergency Team. The situation in relation to other events and mass gatherings remains under review and any response will be guided by the NPHET which meets again tomorrow, along with the public health advice.
The Committee was chaired by An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar and received briefings from relevant Ministers and officials, including the Chief Medical Officer and the Chief Executive of the Health Service Executive.
