The fires broke out in several areas of the island on Sunday, including Peristeria and Selinia, two popular coastal locations. Authorities said the blazes were spreading rapidly, with strong winds making efforts to contain them more difficult.
A Fire Department spokesman confirmed that two bodies had been recovered from the Peristeria beach area. The victims are believed to have been a couple.
Hundreds of residents and tourists were ordered to leave areas affected by the fires as flames moved through populated parts of the island.
“There are hundreds of bathers and permanent residents, an evacuation order has been issued,” Fire Department deputy spokesman Yiannis Artopios told state broadcaster ERT.
Four evacuation orders were issued in quick succession as authorities attempted to move people away from the fires.
“It is a difficult fire... inside an inhabited area,” Mr Artopios said.
Several buildings have been damaged, while five people were reportedly taken to a local health facility for treatment.
Around 200 firefighters were deployed to tackle the fires, supported by dozens of fire engines, aircraft, helicopters, volunteers and water tankers. Additional crews and equipment were brought in from mainland Greece as the situation developed.
The coastguard also sent patrol boats to the island, while private vessels and ferries were placed on standby in case people needed to be evacuated by sea.
Local authorities said they were working to prevent the fires from spreading towards mountainous areas, where separate blazes could potentially join together.
Salamina, located close to Athens and easily reached from the port of Piraeus, was particularly busy this weekend due to Greece's August 15 Assumption holiday. The national holiday is traditionally one of the busiest travel periods of the Greek summer, bringing large numbers of people to the country's islands.
The island had been placed under a high wildfire risk warning on Sunday.
The cause of the fires has not yet been established.
The blazes come after a series of major fires across Greece in recent weeks, as strong winds and dry conditions have created difficult conditions for firefighters.
Authorities said 34 fires had been reported across the country during the previous 24 hours.
The Greek fires are part of a wider pattern of extreme wildfire activity across Europe this summer, with prolonged heat and dry vegetation contributing to increasingly dangerous conditions.
