China has made history by landing the Chang’e-4 spacecraft on the far side of the moon. The mission is to better understand the composition and condition of the lunar surface.

The China National Space Administration released a statement saying the lander and rover had touched down. This is the first human-made object to reach the region that was always seen as very difficult to navigate. This was because the far side points away from Earth.

China had to use a second spacecraft, in orbit, to send and receive signals which would otherwise be blocked out by the moon.

The impressive achievement comes almost one month after the spacecraft was launched, on 7 December 2018.
