A vote of no confidence has been triggered in British Prime Minister Theresa May.

48 letters challenging her leadership of the Conservative Party have been submitted to the chair of a committee of backbench MPs.

The vote is due to take place later this evening.

It comes after Mrs May delayed the crucial vote on the Brexit deal in the House of Commons.

The timing of the confidence motion puts the Theresa May’s planned visit to Dublin this evening in doubt.

She was scheduled to meet with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar at 6:45 this evening – a direct clash with the timing of the confidence motion in the House of Commons.

Leo Varadkar has already ruled out any renegotiation of the deal or changes to the backstop aimed at avoiding a hard border.
