Sir Mick Jagger returned to familiar ground this week as he made a surprise visit to his old school, Dartford Grammar in Kent, delighting students and staff alike.
The Rolling Stones frontman also stopped by The Mick Jagger Centre, which is marking its 25th anniversary with a programme of special performances and events. The centre, built in partnership with the school, has become a major cultural hub for the local community, offering music, theatre and arts outreach to young people.

During his impromptu stop, The Rolling Stones frontman toured the school's arts venue he helped open in 2000, met with students and staff, and enjoyed a short performance from kids in the "Red Rooster" program, the weekly music initiative he funds for more than 1,280 local children. #mickjagger #therollingstones ♬ original sound - consequence
During his visit, Jagger spoke warmly about the importance of music education and the teachers who shaped his early years. “I would like to offer my thanks to all the music teachers at The Mick Jagger Centre and at the school who inspired children and young people in their musical careers, music and the arts to help us to understand what it's like to be human, what it's like to express our feelings and emotions.”
He continued: “Singing and playing is a great way to express your feelings, whether they are feelings of anger, angst, tenderness or love. Music also brings us together in a common experience, whether we are singing in a choir, playing here in Dartford, or listening to a band at Wembley Stadium.”
The school’s headmaster, Julian Metcalf, said Jagger’s return was a major moment for the community. He described the visit as “very special and the icing on the cake” for the school’s celebrations.
For a generation of students now walking the same corridors the rock icon once did, the visit served as both a surprise and a reminder of how far creativity and education can take you — even all the way to global stages.
