A man arrested after being found walking along the M7 motorway in Co Kildare told gardaí he was on his way to Cork, Athy District Court heard last week.

Stansislav Ocheretianyi, 50, of Dolcain House, Clondalkin, appeared before Judge Desmond Zaidan at Athy District Court after being taken into custody the previous night.

The court heard he had been arrested under Section 43 of the Road Traffic Act after being found walking on the M7.

The arresting garda told the court that the defendant was appearing in relation to “jaywalking”, before clarifying that it had taken place “on the M7”.

The garda said a translator had told him the previous night that Mr Ocheretianyi was walking to Cork.

“To Cork?” the judge asked.

The garda said he believed the man had walked from CityWest.

When asked what time the incident occurred, the garda said it was “quarter to nine at night”.

Judge Zaidan asked about Mr Ocheretianyi's condition, with the garda confirming that he was “not drunk”.

The court heard that Mr Ocheretianyi had an address in Clondalkin and that he had been arrested “for his own safety”.

The garda then told the court that officers discovered a bench warrant issued by Blanchardstown District Court on 29 August.

Judge Zaidan subsequently remanded Mr Ocheretianyi on continuing bail, with the case adjourned for his appearance at Naas District Court on 20 October.

There was a further incident in court when a garda agreed to assist with translation for Mr Ocheretianyi.

However, she quickly withdrew from the role after the defendant spoke to her in his native language.

The garda told the court that she had been insulted by Mr Ocheretianyi and said she would not be able to translate for him.
