A woman has died following an assault at a residential property in Waterford city, with a man now in custody as Gardaí continue their investigation.
Emergency services were called to an incident at a house in the Grange Heights housing estate at approximately 6.15pm on Monday evening. A woman, aged in her 40s, was discovered with serious injuries and was taken to University Hospital Waterford, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
A man, also aged in his 40s, was arrested at the scene and is currently being held at a Garda station in the Waterford Division. He is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, which allows for questioning for up to 24 hours, excluding rest periods, before he must either be charged or released.
It is understood that the man and the deceased were known to each other.
The scene at Grange Heights has been preserved for a full forensic and technical examination, while the State Pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem examination is expected to take place as part of efforts to establish the exact cause of death.
A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the inquiry, and an incident room has been set up at Waterford Garda Station to coordinate the investigation.
A Family Liaison Officer has also been assigned to support the family of the deceased woman, who is believed to be Czech.
Gardaí have issued an appeal for witnesses, particularly anyone who was in the Grange Heights area between 6pm and 6.30pm on Monday evening. They are also urging anyone with camera footage, including CCTV or dashcam recordings, to come forward as part of the investigation.
