A man will be handed a life sentence later this week after being convicted today of the murder of a young father in Dublin in 2019.

Wayne Cooney, from Glenshane Drive, Tallaght, shot Jordan Davis three times while he was pushing a pram with his 4-month-old baby inside.

Following an analysis of WhatsApp messages exchanged between Jordan Davis and a suspected drug dealer in the days leading up to the shooting, it’s believed the 21yo was killed in front of his baby son over a €70,000 drug debt.

Towards the end of the WhatsApp thread, Jordan was warned, “it won’t be long.” The final message he received was, “get off me phone soon. Very soon. Bang, bang.” The prosecution believed this message was a genuine threat on his life.

However, they didn’t have to prove a motive for the killing for a jury to find Wayne Cooney guilty of murder.

A garda identified him on CCTV footage harvested in the wake of the shooting and his DNA was found on gloves discarded near the scene.

He was also convicted of related firearms offences and will be sentenced on Friday.
