A one-ton elephant seal known as Neil has once again become an unlikely local celebrity after returning to shore in Tasmania—bringing plenty of chaos with him.
The enormous marine mammal, affectionately nicknamed Neil the Seal, made his annual appearance on land last week as part of his natural moulting season, when elephant seals leave the water to rest and shed their fur.
But as in previous years, Neil's visit has caused headaches for wildlife officials and amused thousands online.

Videos shared on social media show the giant seal slowly making his way through suburban streets, blocking roads, flattening bollards and leaving authorities scrambling to keep both him and the public safe.
Footage captured staff from Tasmania's Department of Natural Resources and Environment attempting to gently redirect Neil using long poles and large sheets of cardboard as he wandered through residential areas.
One particularly tense clip shows the curious seal approaching a parked van while onlookers warn the owner he may be about to climb onto the vehicle.
"He's about to get up and smash the windows," one voice can be heard saying.
Fortunately, Neil's attention is diverted by a passerby, giving the driver enough time to move the van out of harm's way before the giant animal can cause any damage.

Despite his slow, lumbering movements, Neil has developed a reputation for causing plenty of destruction whenever he comes ashore. The hefty seal—estimated to weigh around one tonne—has previously crushed roadside bollards, blocked traffic and damaged parked cars simply by hauling his enormous body across them.
His latest appearance quickly delighted social media users, many of whom joked that Neil had returned bigger and bolder than ever.
One person wrote: "He's more ungovernable than ever."
Another joked: "Imagine explaining that to the insurance company! Do they have a Neil clause?"

Wildlife authorities continue to remind members of the public to keep their distance whenever Neil comes ashore. Although elephant seals generally prefer to be left alone, they are protected wild animals and can become dangerous if they feel threatened.
Neil's annual visits have become something of a tradition in Tasmania, where locals eagerly await the arrival of the famously mischievous seal each winter. While his unexpected detours may cause temporary disruption, many residents have embraced him as an unlikely celebrity whose yearly appearances never fail to entertain.
For now, authorities are expected to continue monitoring Neil until he has finished resting and moulting, after which the giant seal will make his way back into the ocean—leaving behind flattened bollards, plenty of stories and another memorable chapter in his growing legend.
