A new poll suggests that one in four adults won’t be spending Christmas with the people they want this year, highlighting the compromises many are forced to make during the festive season.

Research of 2,000 adults who celebrate Christmas revealed that 34 per cent regularly have to adjust their plans around who they spend the day with. One in five participants reported that their celebrations will involve mixing both their own family and their in-laws, while five per cent said they would be spending the holiday exclusively with their partner’s parents.

The survey found that the moments people most fear missing out on are enjoying the Christmas meal together and opening presents, with 32 per cent admitting they will have to appear as if they are enjoying every second of the day, even if they are not.

Overall, 57 per cent of respondents said they would not be spending Christmas in their ideal way this year, citing factors such as different family circumstances, loved ones being away on holiday, or the need to split time between households. Specifically, 10 per cent said they would be splitting the day between different sides of the family, while 35 per cent noted changes in family circumstances were affecting their plans.

Despite these compromises, many adults are choosing to adapt. Forty per cent of those affected said they are happy to adjust their celebrations, though 29 per cent admitted they will miss their usual traditions. Meanwhile, 42 per cent said that if distance were not an issue, they would include more family members in their Christmas celebrations this year.

The findings highlight the balancing act many people face during the festive season, trying to maintain traditions while accommodating family logistics and travel challenges. For those separated from loved ones, the results underline the emotional strain that can come with what is meant to be a joyful time of year.
