Two men have been charged following an alleged assault on an off-duty garda who sustained serious facial injuries and a concussion after he was recognised in Dublin city centre.

Taylor Ryan (22), from Wicklow, and Daryl Waldron (32), from Dublin, appeared before Dublin District Court on Saturday charged with assault causing harm to the officer in the early hours of June 21.

The court heard that Gardaí obtained video footage, including audio recordings, of the pair on Aston Quay allegedly discussing the assault, during which it was claimed they said the injured party had been "knocked out cold."

Judge Gráinne Malone was told the two men "made no reply" after they were arrested and charged on Friday, according to evidence given by Det Garda William McCarthy and Det Garda Niamh McCarthy.

The judge noted that 13 solicitors had been contacted in an effort to secure legal representation for the defendants after they were detained for questioning.

However, neither man had legal representation during Garda interviews or at Saturday's court hearing because of ongoing industrial action by solicitors in relation to proposed legal aid reforms.

In the interests of fairness, the investigating Gardaí did not oppose bail for the unrepresented defendants but sought a number of conditions, which Judge Malone imposed.

Although neither defendant was required to give evidence, both consented to the bail conditions imposed by the court. They were ordered to have no contact with each other or with any witnesses in the case. They must also provide Gardaí with an address within 48 hours, remain outside the Dublin 1 and Dublin 2 areas, and observe a nightly curfew from 11pm until 6am.

Outlining the State's case, detectives said the incident occurred at approximately 12.10am on Westmoreland Street, where the off-duty officer was allegedly recognised by Ryan following an interaction between them three days earlier.

Judge Malone ruled that the case should be sent forward to the Circuit Court, which has wider sentencing powers.

Ryan and Waldron have not yet entered pleas. They are due to appear before the court again on July 29. A book of evidence has yet to be served.
