A special wall dedicated to the late Beatle John Lennon has been vandalised in the Czech Republic.
The colourful mural has been painted over with white paint, with the words “wall is over” scrawled across artwork.
The mural appeared in Prague following the musician’s assassination in 1980. It became a sign of defiance in the build-up to the anti-Communist uprising of the Velvet Revolution in 1989.
A group of art students claimed responsibility for defacing the wall, leaving the message “wall is over”, an apparent pun of Lennon’s hit ‘Happy Xmas (War Is Over).’
The Prague students explained that communism isn’t a threat anymore and that they painted the wall “to provide free space for new messages of the current generation.”
The wall’s owner, the Sovereign Order of Malta, are allegedly pursuing legal action following the act of vandalism.
One of the students, Jan Dotrel, wrote on Facebook they did not mean to commit an act of vandalism but that it was “an art project.”
This isn’t the first time the wall has been painted over. Communist authorities did it several times to stop the influence of western musicians in the country. Another art group painted the wall green in 2000.
