Kieran Smyth has appeared in court with 5 charges following a bomb attack outside a police station in Belfast.

The 66 year old from Belfast appeared before the Magistrates court today, Saturday the 2nd of May, accused of causing an explosion, hijacking, compelling a person to use a vehicle for an unlawful purpose, possession of a mobile phone SIM card for terrorist purposes and attempted murder.

The court heard that a delivery driver had been hijacked at gunpoint by two men. The men then placed a bomb in the drivers car with 30  minutes set before it went off. The driver was then told to drive to the PSNI station at Dunmurry.

A PSNI officer has stated that Mr.Smyth was connected to the crime via CCTV footage, and had bought the phone that called the delivery driver.

After the attack Mr.Smyth made numerous internet searches into the bombing.

The defendant did not apply for bail although legal aid was granted. The defendants solicitor aid suggested that this was a case of "overcharging". However the Judge ruled that it was an ongoing investigation in which more information may become clear, and that she would remand the accused into custody on all charges.
