The Department of Health has written to the HSE looking for a public health report on injuries sustained by e-scooters.
This comes in response to a surge in serious injuries sustained by children and teenagers which have been linked to these vehicles.
This was confirmed by Health Minister, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, who said that the need to take further measures to address this ongoing problem is huge.
Aontú leader, Peadar Tóibín, said that there is a major concern over the use of e-scooters, with Temple Street children's hospital confirming that six children have been admitted to intensive car over a two week period last month, with Minister MacNeill agreeing that swift action is need to tackle this problem. Four out of the six children were on life support.
Last week, it was also announced that teenager, Janis Ghirghircic Ozols, from Co Carlow, aged 17 had died after falling from an e-scooter.
Peadar Tóibín had also asked Ms Carroll Mac Neill about what steps are going to be taken by the Government in order to reduce the problem with e-scooters and what resources are being implemented, calling this problem "a crisis in this country" and that he had "seen gangs of 10 or 11-year-old children whizzing around".
The Aointu leader added that "these vehicles are being misused", and has called on further measures to be considered, including handing down fines to parents who allow their underage children to use e-scooters.
RTÉ have reported that the Minister has said that Professor Ellen Crushell, the department's chief medical officer, and consultant paediatrician at Temple Street, has "formally written" to the HSE's national director of public health, Dr John Cuddihy to "seek an initial public health report on e-scooter injuries".
"That report is intended to examine the scale of the issue," Ms Carroll MacNeill said, adding she is looking for the health, transport and road policy to align on addressing this issue and that if young people saw "the impact of an acquired brain injury" they would realise "it can be devastating, such a tragedy, such a catastrophe".
