A man in his 40s has been arrested in connection to the death of a 39-year old prisoner in Wheatfeild prison.
The victim Brendan Gahan, originally from Tallaght, was serving a sentence for drug related offences when he was stabbed on Thursday night.
An internal investigation was opened alongside a Garda inquiry. Reports state that the prison officers responded to a commotion in the cell, where they then found Gahan unresponsive.
In a statement the Irish prison service stated: “The Irish Prison Service can confirm a death in custody at Wheatfield Prison on 13 August 2026.
“All deaths in custody are investigated by the Irish Prison Service, the Inspector of Prisons and An Garda Síochána, where circumstances warrant.
“The cause of death is determined by the Coroner’s Office. The Irish Prison Service wishes to express our condolences to the deceased’s family and friends.
“Next of kin have been informed.”
