Charlie Hunnam is bringing the Sons of Anarchy gang back together for a new FX series, and he says reuniting with his former co-stars has been a “joy”.
Hunnam is developing Legends, a new limited series inspired by the hit motorcycle drama, more than a decade after Sons of Anarchy came to an end.
But this isn't a straightforward revival.
Instead, Legends will see Hunnam and several of his former co-stars playing fictionalised versions of themselves.
The story follows the cast of Sons of Anarchy as they reunite at a fan convention more than 10 years after the original series ended. Things quickly go wrong when the group finds itself facing a real-world threat.
Speaking to ET, Hunnam opened up about bringing his former castmates back together.
“It's such an important moment in all of our lives. It's such a joy to be able to write for them. I know them so well.”
He also described the project as a heightened version of Sons of Anarchy, with the actors playing versions of themselves.
“It's a heightened version [of Sons Of Anarchy] but we're all playing versions of ourselves. It's bizarre and hilarious.”

Hunnam previously explained that the idea for the project came from a series of dreams he had about returning to the Sons of Anarchy set with his former co-stars.
“I'd been having just a lot of dreams about being on set with that cast again,” he told E! News. “And I realized there was something in my subconscious that was yearning to bring that crew back together.”
The actor eventually developed that idea into Legends, which he has written and will executive produce.
He recently described the series as “definitely comedic”, with Hunnam playing himself while going through what he described as a midlife crisis and nervous breakdown.
His character is invited to a 10-year Sons of Anarchy reunion at a convention, where, as Hunnam put it, “it all goes horribly wrong.”
Several familiar faces from the original series will be joining him.
Katey Sagal, who played Gemma Teller Morrow, is returning, alongside Ron Perlman as Clay Morrow.
Maggie Siff, who played Tara Knowles, will also return, as will Mark Boone Junior, who portrayed Bobby Munson.
Tommy Flanagan is back as Chibs Telford, while Kim Coates returns as Tig Trager and Theo Rossi returns as Juice Ortiz.
Hunnam will once again be at the centre of the story, although this time he won't be playing Jax Teller.
FX has confirmed that further cast members are expected to be announced.
The original Sons of Anarchy ran for seven seasons from 2008 until 2014, following Hunnam's Jax Teller and the members of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club in the fictional California town of Charming.
The series ended with Jax's death, making a traditional continuation of his story difficult.
Rather than undoing that ending, Hunnam has found another way to bring the cast back together.
FX has described Legends as both a “love letter” to Sons of Anarchy and a meta twist on what audiences know about the original series.
Theo Rossi, who played Juice Ortiz in Sons of Anarchy, also teased what fans can expect, writing: “This is gonna be a WILD RIDE.”
For Hunnam, the project is also a chance to work with a group of actors who played a major role in his life.
The actor has said that he had been trying to find a way to reunite the cast for years, explaining that he had written since 2005 and had repeatedly struggled to get his projects made.
This time, he stayed with the idea.
“I really—I stayed on it and stayed on it and stayed on it. It's very exciting to get the crew back together,” he told E! News.
There is currently no release date for Legends, but the project is moving forward at FX.
