Dave Grohl has reflected on how he managed to secure the services of the late drummer Taylor Hawkins for his band, Foo Fighters.
The frontman spoke to Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where he said that he knew that he and Hawkins would be "best friends for the rest of our lives" from the moment they met.
Taylor Hawkins joined Foo Fighters in March 1997, having left Alanis Morissette's band that same month. At the time, Foo Fighters were putting the final touches to their successful second album, The Colour and the Shape.
Speaking to Kimmel, Dave Grohl explained how the band managed to poach Taylor Hawkins from Alanis Morissette's band, and how they forged an instant connection from the moment they met. Hawkins sadly passed away aged 50 in 2022, just hours before Foo Fighters were due to perform live in Colombia.
"Our first record came out around the time Alanis' first record came out", Grohl told Kimmel. "So we were doing a bunch of those festivals and radio shows and things, but that was the first time I met Taylor, backstage".
"Here comes this blond, surfer dude, like, 'Yo, dude. I love your band. You guys are so awesome. Yadda-yadda-yadda", he added. "I knew, right then, I was like, 'Oh, we're gonna be best friends for the rest of our lives".
Back in March of this year, Dave Grohl had admitted that Hawkins' death "made me question everything about life".
At the time, Grohl told MOJO that “losing Taylor was never meant to be,” adding: “That threw our world upside down and made me question everything about life, that it was so unfair. I still have a hard time making sense of it". More on this story here.
That same month, fans and friends of Taylor Hawkins paid moving tributes to the late drummer for the fourth anniversary of his death. This included photographer, Sarah Jeynes, who shared a series of photos, including ones from their first meeting in 2005.
