Stephen Graham has taken aim at what he describes as “arrogant” behaviour from some actors on set, criticising those who keep cast and crew waiting because they believe they are indispensable.

The Adolescence star made it clear that his comments were not directed at any specific co-star, but were instead a broader reflection on what he sees as a problem within parts of Hollywood culture.

“There is a lot of actors that aren't on time,” Graham told Deadline.

“That's exceptionally disrespectful. To leave a crew, that have been there well before you and will leave well after you, waiting around because you are some Lord and Saviour and the goose that lays the golden egg is disgusting…it's just not cricket.”

The phrase “not cricket” — a distinctly British expression signalling unfairness or poor conduct — underlined Graham’s frustration.

Known for his grounded personality and working-class roots, the Liverpool-born actor has long spoken about the importance of respecting crew members, many of whom work gruelling hours behind the scenes.

Graham’s career spans more than two decades, with acclaimed performances in projects including This Is England, Boardwalk Empire, and Boiling Point, as well as a supporting turn in The Irishman. Throughout that time, he has built a reputation as one of Britain’s most reliable character actors — intense on screen but notably humble off it.

His latest project, Adolescence, has further cemented his standing. The series has been praised for its raw performances and sharp writing, adding to Graham’s growing list of critically acclaimed television roles. In recent years, he has become something of a fixture in high-end British drama, frequently collaborating with top-tier writers and directors.

@dailymailbehindthelens THIS LOOKS SO INTENSE! 😬 Adolescence is a four-part limited series filmed in one continuous shot, with each episode holding focus on the characters as the drama unfolds in real time 🎥 The show starring Stephen Graham and Ashley Walters is directed by the creator of Boiling Point, Philip Barantini 🍿 🎥 - NETFLIX UK #adolescence #netflix #boilingpoint #stephengraham #ashleywalters #topboy #ukdrama #britishtv #oneshot ♬ original sound - Behind The Lens

Speaking to Deadline after a recent win, Graham was also asked about the possibility of another season of Adolescence. While fans may be eager for more, he remained tight-lipped.

“I cannot answer that question. It's somewhere in the deep recesses of my mind and (co-creator) Jack (Thorne)'s mind, and we'll pull it out in three or four years, so stay tuned.”

His reference to Jack Thorne, the acclaimed writer behind projects such as His Dark Materials and The Virtues, suggests that if the series does return, it will be carefully considered rather than rushed.

Graham’s comments about on-set etiquette reflect a wider conversation within the industry about working conditions and respect. Film and television productions rely on vast teams — from lighting technicians and costume designers to runners and catering staff — who often begin work before dawn and wrap long after the stars have left. Delays caused by late arrivals can cost productions thousands per hour, as well as erode morale.

Having worked in both British and American productions, Graham has seen the industry at multiple levels, from indie dramas to major Hollywood films. His criticism appears less about celebrity itself and more about professionalism.

Whether or not Adolescence returns for another chapter, Graham’s reputation as a straight-talking, no-nonsense performer looks set to remain intact — both on and off screen.
