The actor, renowned for playing tough, authoritarian figures in the 1980s classics, passed away "peacefully", with no cause of death announced.
Prior to his acting career, Tolkan served in the US Navy, spending 25 years acting in theatre. He was also a member of the original ensemble cast of Glengarry Glen Ross.
Tolkan starred as vice principal, Gerald Strickland in the time travelling adventure, Back To The Future, a man who kept a close eye on students along the corridors of the fictional Hill Valley High School, including Marty McFly, played by Michael J Fox.
In the film, Tolkan's character says to McFly: "You got a real attitude problem, McFly", before adding: "You’re a slacker. You remind me of your father when he went here. He was a slacker, too".

Towards the end of the movie, Jardian asks Cruise's character, Captain Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell about his choice of future duty, which Mitchell said he wanted to be a Top Gun instructor. Tolkan's character replies: "God help us".
