Balbriggan is set to gain global attention this weekend as it plays host to a major moment in American football—the NFL Draft—for one of the league’s most iconic teams, the Green Bay Packers. The four-time Super Bowl champions will base their draft operations at the Irish Institute of Music and Song (IIMS), where representatives from all 32 NFL teams will gather to select emerging talent from the U.S. college football system.

This decision to spotlight an Irish location is part of the NFL’s broader international strategy. Through its Global Markets Programme, the league has been actively working to expand its fan base beyond the United States, with Ireland becoming an increasingly important market. Bringing a key part of the draft process to Balbriggan highlights both the country’s growing interest in the sport and its potential as a hub for future NFL-related events.

The weekend will also feature a strong cultural element. Singer-songwriter Gavin James is scheduled to perform, accompanied by students from the IIMS, adding a distinctly local flavour to an event that will be broadcast worldwide. Coverage will air across major networks including ABC, ESPN, and the NFL Network in the United States, as well as Sky Sports and DAZN for international audiences, ensuring millions of viewers will see Balbriggan on their screens.

Irish involvement in the draft extends beyond the town itself. Stephen O’Brien, a dedicated Packers supporter from Arklow, County Wicklow, will travel to Pittsburgh to announce one of the team’s Day Three draft picks. As founder of the UK and Ireland Packers fan club, O’Brien has become a prominent figure in the franchise’s overseas community. His contributions have even been recognized with a mural in his hometown, celebrating his role in growing the team’s fan base abroad.

The scale of the NFL Draft continues to grow each year. In 2025, it attracted an audience of approximately 7.5 million viewers, making it one of the most-watched drafts in league history. This level of attention underscores the significance of hosting any part of the event, particularly for a town like Balbriggan.

The timing also aligns with ongoing development efforts in the area. The town is currently benefiting from a €60 million regeneration initiative known as “Our Balbriggan,” led by Fingal County Council. Launched seven years ago following extensive community consultation involving a quarter of the local population, the plan focuses on economic growth, infrastructure, and social development. Hosting an event of this magnitude is seen as a major boost to those efforts.

Michael T. Dawson, CEO of the IIMS campus, described the opportunity as a remarkable milestone for both the institution and the wider community. He credited the IIMS Harp Ensemble—an accomplished group of young musicians aged 9 to 18—for helping to secure the event. Their collaborations with international artists showcased the unique cultural offering Balbriggan could bring to a global stage.

The NFL’s presence in Ireland reflects a broader trend of increasing interest in American football across the country. This momentum was further demonstrated when Ireland hosted its first-ever NFL game, featuring the Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings, an event widely regarded as a major success by government officials, including Minister for Sport Patrick O’Donovan.

Altogether, the weekend represents not just a sporting occasion, but a cultural and economic opportunity—placing Balbriggan firmly on the international map.
