A new six part series following the early days of The Beatles is to air on BBC.

The new series named, 'Hamburg Days' is based on a memoir that documented the transformation of a group of teenagers into a band known worldwide.

The book by by German musician Klaus Voormann and German photographer and artist Astrid Kirchherr was originally published in 1999. The book is set in the early 1960's in Hamburg's St Pauli red-light district.

It documents the time that Voormann and Kirchherr spent with the band before their unimaginable success.

German director Christian Schwochow, will act as the series show runner. He has previously worked on the Netflix series 'The Crown'. Joining him is Bafta-winner David Holmes, who will be curating the music, he has previously worked Killing Eve and the Ocean’s franchise.

Sue Deeks, Head of Scripted Pre-buy Acquisitions at the BBC stated in a press release, "Hamburg Days is the fascinating story of how, in the space of two short years, a raw young band from Liverpool honed their music skills in Hamburg, before returning home to become an overnight worldwide success. It is an incredible story, accompanied (of course) by an amazing soundtrack!"

Producer and collaborator Giles Martin spoke to NME about the new series and stated that they will be giving the documentary a new lease of life with "improved audio and video quality".

“The episodes first came out in the ‘90s in the days of things being shot on video. Peter Jackson’s team can restore everything. It’s amazing with the benefit of hindsight. In the years before ‘Anthology’ first came out, no one was talking about The Beatles in that whole chasm of time. Since then, that triggered a plethora of stuff,” Martin said.

'Hamburg days' follows the original members of The Beatles John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best, during their time in Germany.

The brand new series will air on BBC and BBC iPlayer.
