In a recent interview with RadioTimes, Stiller talked about how social media and the political climate is making it diffciult for comedians to take risks.
“We live in a world where taking chances with comedy is more challenging,” Stiller said. He explains that during Trumps second term in office, he has noticed that the genre has become harder to navigate.
“You’re seeing that front and centre in our country, but I think it is important that comedians keep doing what they’re doing, speaking truth to power and being free to say what they want. That’s the most important thing," he said.
The Severance director went on to discuss how social media is making people too used to short form content and therefore affecting their abilities to engage with films and tv series.
“You have things that go out to huge audiences very quickly,” Stiller said. “I think we’ve reduced our attention spans down a little bit. I feel lucky to have grown up in the analogue world.”
Stillers comments have come a month after Jimmy Kimmel was suspended by his network for comments he made on his show about the late Charlie Kirk and Trump. The actor was one of the first of celebrities to speak about the situation on social media. “This isn’t right,” he posted on X at the time.
Kimmels show returned on the 22nd of September, although Trump threatened to "test ABC" for putting him, back on air. “I can’t believe ABC Fake News gave Jimmy Kimmel his job back,” Trump posted to Truth Social.
