Bono Unveils ‘Stories of Surrender’ Documentary on Apple TV+

Loading

Bono will bring his acclaimed theatrical memoir to the small screen with the release of Bono: Stories of Surrender, premiering on Apple TV+ on May 30.

Directed by Andrew Dominik, the documentary draws from the U2 frontman’s 2022 autobiography Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story and the accompanying stage show that followed. The film offers an intimate glimpse into Bono’s life, blending personal reflections with stripped-back performances of U2 classics.

A press release promises never-before-seen footage from Bono’s residency at New York’s Beacon Theatre, where he captivated audiences with a mix of music and storytelling. Alongside the standard documentary release, Bono: Stories of Surrender (Immersive) will debut on the same day for Apple Vision Pro users. This version marks the first feature-length film presented in Apple’s cutting-edge Immersive Video format — shot in 8K with Spatial Audio, offering a 180-degree perspective that “places viewers onstage with Bono and at the heart of his narrative.”

Coinciding with the film’s release, a revised paperback edition of Surrender will also hit shelves, featuring updated material from the singer’s reflections.

While U2’s immediate touring plans remain on hold following their Las Vegas Sphere residency, whispers of new music are beginning to stir. Long-time collaborator Brian Eno is reportedly involved in the band’s next project, with the Edge hinting at an experimental direction.

“Bono and I are working on some crazy kind of sci-fi Irish folk music, which could end up becoming a part of the new U2 album. We're not sure yet; we'll see,” the guitarist shared in 2024. “We're at that great phase where we don't have to overthink it. We're just making music and loving that process. And then we'll figure out where things belong afterwards. So there's a couple of different projects.”

With Stories of Surrender set to offer fans a closer look at Bono’s journey, the documentary promises to be both a celebration of the singer’s legacy and a glimpse into the next chapter of U2’s storied career.
