US Masters champion Rory McIlroy has said that his mind was blown, after receiving a message of congratulations by Elton John following his historic victory last month.

Last month, Rory McIlroy made history, by completing a career grand slam, having added the US Masters to his US Open success in 2011, British Open in 2014, and the PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014.

Speaking on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, the County Down native admitted that he was "humbled" and "overwhelmed" by the kind messages that he has received since his historic win. He also revealed that he was particularly blown away to be messaged by music icon, Sir Elton John.

"That was, like, incredible", McIlroy said.

"His assistant left me a voicemail," the golfer continued. "and said, 'Sir Elton would love to congratulate you in person. The only problem is, he doesn't have a cell phone. So you might get a call from Windsor, England, from a land line. And I'm like, Sure!".

"We haven't been able to connect, so I'd love to reach out" he added, "I just think it's so... it's Elton John!".

After Fallon had commented that Elton John is "an icon", Rory McIlroy also added: "It's so cool, it's amazing. I didn't even know Elton John knew what golf was! It's awesome, so I'm just super humbled".

Elsewhere, Rory McIlroy also revealed that his golfing hero, Tiger Woods, sent him a kind message following his US Masters' win, saying: "Welcome to the club, kid".

McIlroy said: "There are only six people who have ever achieved the career Grand Slam in golf, and there are only four of us who are living," he added. "Gary Player, who is 90 years old, Jack Nicklaus, who is 86 years old, and then Woods and myself, so it's really cool to be a part of something like that".
