George Wendt, renowned for starring in the 1980s TV comedy, Cheers, has died aged 76.

The actor is perhaps best known for starring as Norm Peterson in the much loved TV comedy, Cheers. The 1980s hit, which starred Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman, Shelly Long, Kelsey Grammer, John Ratzenberger, Woody Harrelson and Kirstie Alley, was centred on lovable losers at a Boston Bar.

During his time on the hit show,  Wendt earned six consecutive Emmy Award nominations for best supporting actor in comedy series from 1984 to 1989. The comedy also served as a spin off for another show, Frasier, which went on to earn 28 117 Emmy Award nominations, and 28 victories.

The publicity firm The Agency Group confirmed that Wendt, who later forged a career on the Broadway stage with Art, Hairspray and Elf, died peacefully in his sleep at home.

His family also paid tribute with this statement. "George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him," the statement read. "He will be missed forever".

Back in 2022, Kirstie Alley, who co starred alongside George Wendt in Cheers, passed away aged 71. The actress' co stars paid tribute to her, with Ted Danson describing as as "truly brilliant". More on this here.
