Oppenheimer was the big winner, at this year’s Critics Choice Awards, grabbing as many as eight accolades at this year’s ceremony.

Fresh from its Golden Globes success, Oppenheimer won awards for best picture, as well as best director for Christopher Nolan, and best supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr.

However star Cillian Murphy missed out in the Best Actor category this time around, with The Holdovers star Paul Giamatti taking the gong.

The ceremony also saw star Emily Blunt collect the award for best ensemble on behalf of the Oppenheimer cast.

Collecting her award, Blunt heaped the praise on director Christopher Nolan for his “ability to connect with others”.

“I love that we’re calling this an ensemble and we’re very grateful, but most of us were part-timers that gathered around this completely riveting fire of Cillian Murphy. Truly”, she said.

“stand on the shoulder of giants”

Accepting his award on the night, Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan paid tribute to writers Kai Bird and Marty Sherwin.

The Robert J Oppenheimer biography, American Pometheus which landed a Pulitizer Prize in 2005, was written by the pair, and is what the Nolan epic is based on.

“To mangle a quote from Sir Isaac Newton, ‘If I appear tall it’s because I stand on the shoulders of giants’ – the particular giants I am standing on is Kai (Bird) and Marty (Sherwin) who wrote the incredible book American Prometheus and spent 25 years doing it”, Nolan said.

“I thank you Kai for trusting me with your work and Marty, unfortunately he left us before I was able to show him the final script, but Kai your constant reassurances once you saw the film that he would have approved meant the world to me”.

Other winners on the night included American Fiction director Cord Jefferson winning best adapted screenplay, while Greta Gerwig’s Barbie scooped up as many as six awards on the night, including Best Comedy, and best original screenplay.

Ryan Gosling’s ‘I’m Just Ken’ also won best original song on the night.

Elsewhere the TV categories were dominated by Succession, Beef, and The Bear in the major award.
