Dave Grohl has revealed that Foo Fighters have completed work on a brand new studio album, telling fans that the band finished the record just days ago.

The update came during the opening night of the Australian leg of the band’s ‘Take Cover’ tour, which kicked off at UTAS Stadium in Launceston, Tasmania, on Monday night. The show marked Foo Fighters’ first Australian performance of the tour and quickly became memorable for more than just the setlist.

During the encore, the band played ‘Exhausted’, a track from their self-titled 1995 debut album, which Grohl wrote and recorded almost entirely on his own following the death of Kurt Cobain and the end of Nirvana. As he introduced the song, Grohl paused to address the crowd — and casually dropped major news about the band’s future.

“We’ll be back here sooner than you think,” Grohl told the audience. “I know when we’re coming back! It is before my next birthday [January 14, 2027], just so you know.”

He then added: “And we might have a whole new record of songs that we just finished the other day. I dunno!”

While Grohl stopped short of formally announcing the album, his comments strongly suggest that Foo Fighters’ 11th studio record is complete, or very close to release. If confirmed, it would mark the band’s first full-length album since 2023’s But Here We Are — a deeply personal release shaped by the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins and Grohl’s mother, Virginia Grohl, both of whom passed away in 2022.

But Here We Are was widely praised for its emotional honesty and stripped-back intensity, debuting at No. 1 in several countries and reaffirming Foo Fighters’ place as one of the most enduring rock bands of their generation. The album also introduced fans to drummer Josh Freese, who joined the band for touring duties and has since become a central figure in their live lineup.

The ‘Take Cover’ tour sees Foo Fighters leaning heavily into fan favourites and deep cuts, balancing newer material with songs from across their three-decade career. Tracks like ‘Everlong’, ‘The Pretender’, and ‘Best of You’ remain staples, while the inclusion of early songs such as ‘Exhausted’ has been seen by fans as a nod to the band’s roots — and to Grohl’s origins as a songwriter.

Grohl’s reference to returning to Australia before January 14, 2027, his 58th birthday, suggests that Foo Fighters may already be planning a major future tour cycle tied to the new album’s release. While no dates or titles have been announced, Grohl’s on-stage comments are likely to fuel speculation about a 2026 global tour, which could include European and Irish dates.

For Irish fans, the news will be especially welcome. Foo Fighters have a long history with Ireland, having played headline shows in Dublin, Slane, and Belfast, with Grohl often singling out Irish crowds as some of the band’s most passionate.

Though Grohl framed the announcement with his trademark humour, the message was clear: Foo Fighters are far from slowing down. With a new record reportedly finished and touring plans already being hinted at, the band appear poised to enter their next chapter — louder, older, and still very much in motion.

Foo Fighters Share Message And Tease Tour In AI Assisted Promo Video

Foo Fighters have shared a message about their return and introduce their new drummer in an AI promo video.

Foo Fighters have confirmed that there is more to be expected from the band as they said in a statement that there is "More to come" from the rock band and that their fans should "Stay Tuned."

The bands new promo video opens with an AI generated Dave Grohl addressing the camera, "Hey, everyone. It’s been a while but I’m happy to announce that Foo Fighters are coming back to bring you that 100 per cent real, raw, human element of rock and roll," he said.

Bassist Nate Mendel then emerges on screen stating that “after 30 years of being a band, we’ve realised that the most important thing to us is that what you see and hear coming from our speakers is the genuine passion of the six living, breathing human beings on stage.”

Then AI Pat Smear with three legs appears to explain how important it is for their fans to know that their "music is true."

Grohl then introduces their new drummer Ilan Rubin, before he appears playing a mega drum kit with 10 arms.

Foo Fighters have recently returned to the stage as they performed shows in California earlier this month. These shows marked the first of many that Rubin will be drumming with the band.

Rubin took to Instagram after the shows to thank fans for their support. "After keeping my head down for a couple wild months and throwing myself into the material, that first show was such an incredible release of energy. I’ve been taken aback by all the positivity and support, and I just wanted to say thanks! Excited for all the volume and sweat that lies ahead," Rubin said.
