A protest is being organised against the planned redevelopment of Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre in Dublin, following Dublin City Council’s decision to grant planning permission for the project.
The Save Stephen’s Green campaign is calling on the public to gather outside the centre at 1pm on Saturday, May 9, to oppose the proposed changes. The group says the redevelopment threatens the building’s “distinctive charm” and argues it would replace an iconic 1980s landmark with what they describe as “soulless modernity”.
Campaigners are also urging authorities to have the structure recognised as a protected building, citing its historical significance. They say city planning should better balance developer interests with the needs and character of Dublin.

The protest follows strong public response to the plans, with nearly 25,000 people signing a petition opposing the redesign. More than 60 submissions were previously made to Dublin City Council, the majority of which were reportedly against the development.
The approved plans would see the centre expanded to eight storeys, with a reconfiguration of retail space, new office areas, cinema screens, and the addition of a bar or restaurant with a terrace. An appeal period remains open until May 18, with objections already submitted to An Coimisiún Pleanála slowing the process.
