The late legend's tune was played during the credits of the final ever episode that was released on New Year's Day.
According to new Luminate data, the track saw a 500 per cent surge on streaming sites after the release of the final episode.
It has been reported that previously 'Heroes' had been reeling in about 94,000 digital streams per day over the last five months. Since the Stranger Things finale the tune has been reaching some impressive numbers. The track reached 342,000 online plays on January 1, 456,000 on January 2, and 470,000 on January 3. This is an approximate increase of 3.6-to-5 times since the finale.
The shows co-creator Ross Duffer revealed that the song was chosen as it was suggested by Joe Keery, who plays Steve Harrington in the series. “Once Joe said that, we immediately knew that was the right song to end the show on because it is, in some ways, an anthem for Stranger Things, to use the original Bowie version just felt right and fitting for the conclusion,” he said.
The finale also featured two of Prince's iconic tracks, 'Purple Rain' and 'When Doves Cry', which both have seen a rise in streams since the finale. Kate Bush's song 'Running Up That Hill' saw similar results when the song was featured in season four of the series.
The show has gained a lot of traction since the finale, as the final episode debuted to 59.6million views, marking a new record for an English-language title on Netflix.
Although the final episode seemed to wrap everything up nicely, fans are convinced that there is a secret 9th episode. Through social media fans have been sharing their theories which is now named "conformity gate." The final episode jumped to 18 months into the future and gave a glimpse into each characters life post 'Upside Down' trauma, but it left the fate of Millie Bobby Browns character 'Eleven' up for interpretation.
Fans believe that the finale was a 'fake finale' and that Vecnas influence has not yet been broken and that each character is living in a false reality. Viewers have noticed some obvious plot holes such as the beloved relationship between Robin and Vicky remaining unclear which some suggest that this is because Vecna did not know Vicky. There were also moments when background characters broke the fourth wall, graduation gowns being the wrong colour, and the shot of their binders at the end which fans have noticed has spelled out 'a lie' with their names.
However, there is no indication from the Duffer brothers that there is a secret finale. Randy Havens, who portrays teacher Scott Clarke in the series responded to these theories, he said: “There is no Snyder Cut of the show, please don’t believe everything some random ass tells you on the internet."
The Duffer brothers have come out and stated that they wish they did not do any interviews after the episode was released as they apparently gave the impression that the fan theories were correct. "I really shouldn’t have done any of these postmortem interviews” Matt Duffer said. “I am not in a good place. Like, why the hell did we do any of them yesterday is beyond me. I’m, like, fried. I was getting over the flu. So, anyone mad at any answers we gave you yesterday, just cut me some slack.”
