Fianna Fáil councillor, Rory Hogan said that he thinks the high-visibility policing in Dublin has made it safer, but the communities experiece "profound impacts" due to the assaults.
21-year old, Qayyum Balogun tragically died after an assault in the Grafton Street area in the early hours of yesterday morning.
Balogun was found on Clarendon Street, near Grafton street in a serious condition. He was brought to St James' Hospital, where he sadly passed away.
A 19-year-old woman was also injured during the incident and was taken to hospital with non life threatening injuries.
Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Cllr Hogan said the attack on Dublin's Grafton Street was a "deeply disturbing incident and one that nobody wants to see occurring on the streets of Dublin".
"Incidents like these have profound impacts not only on the victim's family but also on the wider communities," he continued.
When Cllr Hogan was asked if the streets of Dublin were safe, he said that it was hard as "sometimes incidents like these occur" including that "we need to be sure to separate the emotional reaction to an incident like this to the overall statistics."
The Fianna Fáil councillor confirmed on Morning Ireland that the City Centre was infact becoming safer as the overall crime statistics in Dublin are down year on year, making the city safer than it was "a few years ago."
"We need to understand whether there are any wider lessons to be learned and whether additional measures are needed to improve safety in the area," he said.
