Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder has hinted that that band might only have “one or two” good albums left in them.

Speaking recently, Vedder has said that he was driven to complete the band’s new album Dark Matter, by his determination to enjoy each opportunity that a long life provides.

Dark Matter is due to be released on April 19.

“living in the present”

In his interview, Vedder is keen to enjoy each opportunity that live gives him.

“The older you get, the better you are at living in the present”, Vedder said. “The understanding you have less time is the biggest number in the quotient”.

With several of Pearl Jam’s peers including names like Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, Mark Lanegan, and Chris Cornell all dying too young, Eddie Vedder is determined to continue to make the most of his opportunities and to be creative.

“The goal is to keep making music. It’s your passion, your special purpose,” he said.

He also added that: “you lean on the relationships with the people who are still around. It really hits you when you are in a situation where that person would be there – and you’re sad for them that they’re not”.

“But it makes you realize you gotta be healthy,” Vedder insisted. “You want to be around for your kids. You want to make good records – and we might have one or two left”.

“brotherhood”

However, Eddie Vedder did admit that a clean living lifestyle does not always mean that you are guaranteed longevity.

Pointing to a legendary early 1970s photo from Mick Rock, showing David Bowie, Lou Reed and Iggy Pop, Vedder said this.

“Who do you think would have been the last man standing?”, Vedder remarked. “You would not have bet on Iggy Pop. So, you never know”.

On his relationship with his bandmates, the singer called it a “brotherhood”.

“It’s a brotherhood. That was never in doubt,” he said. “There might have been a few speed bumps in the road, but we got through those by looking out for each other. In that way, we felt secure”.

Pearl Jam have also shared a trailer, promoting their new album Dark Matter. This film will be released for one night only across 800 theatres worldwide.
