Two people in their 80s have been seriously injured after the car they were travelling in crashed through a barrier on a flyover before landing on the M50.

The incident occurred at the flyover near Junction 10 at Ballymount, beside the slip road leading onto the southbound carriageway of the motorway.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 3.20pm following the crash. The elderly man and woman, who were the only occupants of the vehicle, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

It is understood no other people were injured in the incident.

The road was closed for a period while the scene was preserved for a forensic examination. It has since reopened to traffic.

Sources said the couple had been travelling on the correct side of the flyover when the driver appeared to lose control of the vehicle.

The car then crashed through the heavy railings along the flyover before coming down the verge and landing on the M50 below.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland warned of significant traffic disruption in the area following the incident, with delays reported to have stretched as far as Junction 6 at Blanchardstown.

Traffic has since resumed, although motorists in the area are continuing to experience heavy congestion.
