Famous Prince Hit ‘Purple Rain’ To Be Adapted Into A Musical

Purple Rain the famous Prince film, is to be adapted into a Broadway musical, it has been confirmed.

This was confirmed by producer Orin Wolf, with the musical set to be directed by Tony nominee Lileana Blain-Cruz  (The Skin of Our TeethJoe Turner’s Come and Gone).

The show will include a book from two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Branden Jacob-Jenkins, and based on the original screenplay from William Blinn and Albert Magnoli.

Purple Rain as a musical will tell the fictional story of “an up-and-coming rock musician in the Minneapolis club scene, as he contends with a tumultuous home environment, a rival band and a budding romance”. 

No details regarding production or release date were announced at the time of writing.

The film which was released in 1984, was a huge success for Prince, earning the singer $100 million world widwide.

Purple Rain was also added into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2019 for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”. 

Music and lyrics for the musical will be from Prince.

The soundtrack from the film also saw the late singer release hit singles such as ‘I Would Die 4 U’, ‘Went Doves Cry’, ‘Lets Go Crazy’ ‘Take Me With You’ and of course ‘Purple Rain’.

Prince’s album also went on to sell over 25 million copies worldwide. It hit top spot in the Billboard Chart, staying there for 24 weeks.

The album also earned Prince two Grammy wins, and an Oscar for Best Original Song Score.

Back in May, it was also confirmed that Prince was to have a part of the Minnesota highway named after him.
