The film follows Springsteen as he records his sixth studio album, 'Nebraska', as he tests the patience of his record label when they want to follow up on his 1980 hit song 'Hungry Heart'. Director Scott Cooper, wrote the script based on the book by Warren Zanes, as he said "Making Springsteen was deeply moving as it allowed me to step inside the soul of an artist I’ve long admired - and to witness, up close, the vulnerability and strength behind his music."
White prepared for the role by studying archive videos of Springsteen to capture and perfect the singers characteristics, particularly his New Jersey accent and rasp. He told GQ magazine that there is "just so much footage."
White is most known for his role in three seasons of the The Bear, where he plays lead Carmen Berzatto, he has won two Emmy's and two Golden Globe awards for this role. He is also known for his character Philip Ronan Gallagher in the tv series 'Shameless'.
Springsteen has been a regular on the film set and has praised White for his perfomance as he states that he is a "terrific actor" who sings very well. He said "He's got an interpretation of me that I think the fans will deeply recognise and he's just done a great job, so I've had a lot of fun."
Springsteen fans have had an optimistic response to the trailer, with one fan stating in the YouTube comment section that they are "Totally sold. And I love that they're not aiming for a full life story, instead picking it up at a time when the biz around him wanted one type of album and he gave them something else entirely. Springsteen doesn't get enough credit for his willingness to take big risks." Another states that they "Love that White didn’t try to look like Springsteen or imitate him but capture his essence. This has a great cast and should be good."
