The Foo Fighters are back in the only way they know how: with an oddball tease that has whipped their fanbase into a frenzy.
Dave Grohl’s six-piece assembled at the band’s LA stronghold, Studio 606, and instead of a full statement or a proper update, they uploaded a shot of nothing but their legs. That, and the rallying cry: “Foo Fighters Assemble!!!” The post dangled a promise of “info you won’t want to miss,” a classic pre-release stunt that somehow works every single time because, well, they’re the Foo Fighters.
It’s a significant moment. 2025 has already been one of the most dramatic years in the group’s history. Josh Freese was abruptly cut loose in May, blindsided by the decision. His replacement? Ilan Rubin of Nine Inch Nails. The twist? Rubin then swapped places and Freese ended up back in Trent Reznor’s camp. All of this would be exhausting, if it weren’t so very rock ’n’ roll.
Meanwhile, Grohl kept momentum alive by dropping two curiosities in July: Today’s Song, a brand new track commemorating the band’s 30th anniversary, and a 1995 vault recording of Minor Threat’s I Don’t Wanna Hear It. Half-archival, half-statement of intent, the band were saying: “We’ve been here all along, and we’re not done yet.”
Now comes the real anticipation: are Foo Fighters laying the foundations for the follow-up to 2023’s But Here We Are? All signs point to yes. Grohl himself framed the band’s journey with rare candour earlier this year: “Over the years, we’ve had moments of unbridled joy, and moments of devastating heartbreak… but we have followed this road together, with each other, for each other, no matter what. Because in life, you just can’t go it alone.”
It is this mix of vulnerability and bravado that keeps the Foo Fighters essential. Even as Grohl prepares to be honoured next month for his quiet volunteer work helping the homeless, the band are back in a circle, legs and all, ready to start something new.
The tease is unsubtle, the hype machine is rolling, and the message is clear: Foo Fighters aren’t done yet. Not even close.
