Two Gardaí have been discharged from hospital following an incident involving vape products at Edenderry Garda Station.
This happened after the Gardaí become unwell when they were involved in processing the vape products, which contained cannabis, and were seized from a commercial premises during a recent investigation.
Edenderry Garda Station was closed to allow for further examination, as Gardaí sought to ascertain how the officers became ill. Both men in question were taken to hospital for medical assessment and have since been discharged. Tullamore will handle all policing services in the area while Edenderry Garda Station remains out of action.
It was also confirmed that a number of evidence bags were removed from the garda station yesterday afternoon.
Gardaí are working to try to establish how these vapes were leaked and if the fumes which contain lithium batteries, emanated from them may have overpowered the officers.
Finbarr Leahy of the Garda Representative Association in Laois Offaly also extended his best wishes to the officers in question and their families.
Elsewhere, An Garda Síochána released a statement saying that they are providing welfare support to the two officers in question and their families.
“The members were involved in processing vape products seized from a commercial premises during an ongoing investigation. Both male members are currently in hospital under medical assessment. An Garda Síochána is providing welfare support to the hospitalised members and their families at this time", they said.
“Edenderry Garda Station will remain closed pending further examination and specialist deep cleaning tomorrow, Thursday 23rd July 2026. Policing services in the area are being provided from Tullamore Garda Station," they added.
