Research in the Lancet medical journal shows Irish woman are amongst the heaviest drinkers in the world in the most comprehensive global study of its kind ever produced.

There’s no “safe” level of drinking with one tipple a day enough to slightly increase the risk of 23 separate health problems.

Irish women are the seventh highest consumers of booze globally, with an average three drinks a day while Irish men consuming around 4.5 drinks daily.

There’s three alcohol related deaths in Ireland a day. Two are from the long term effects of drinking and one is from the event of drinking itself.

The findings were published in a Global Burden of Disease study published in The Lancet that estimates levels of alcohol use and health effects in 195 countries between 1990 to 2016.
