Homer Simpson is heading back to the big screen — and he’s bringing the family with him.
Disney has officially announced a second Simpsons movie, set for release on July 23, 2027, and fans are more than delighted.
It’s been nearly 20 years since the first film turned Springfield into a box-office smash, and fans are already buzzing about what kind of chaos Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie might bring this time around.

The film, still untitled, was teased on Instagram with a poster showing Homer lunging for a sprinkle-covered doughnut shaped into a giant number ‘2,’ alongside the cheeky tagline: ‘Homer’s coming back for seconds.’
Beyond that, the studio is keeping the story firmly under wraps, and it’s unclear if the plot will tie into the series’ ongoing timeline or stand alone, like the 2007 film.
That hasn’t stopped speculation. The first movie saw Springfield trapped under a giant dome after Homer polluted the town’s water supply — a premise that critics praised for recapturing the show’s sharp wit. So what could the sequel serve up?

One possibility: a parody of Hollywood sequels themselves. The Simpsons has never shied away from skewering pop culture, and a meta storyline about the family realising they’re in a sequel would be right in its wheelhouse.
Another option: tackling today’s biggest global issues. With climate change, AI, and streaming wars dominating headlines, the writers have plenty of satire-ready material. Could Homer accidentally break the internet? Could Springfield be bought by a tech billionaire and turned into a theme park?
Or maybe: the film could go small and personal — focusing on the Simpson family itself. Fans would love to see Lisa in a bigger spotlight or Bart facing a grown-up dilemma.
Whatever the story, it’s clear Disney is treating the movie as a tentpole release. It’s even taking over a summer slot once reserved for Marvel, with its biggest competition being Warner Bros.’ animated musical Bad Fairies.
The first Simpsons Movie made over $536 million worldwide on a $75 million budget, so expectations are high. And with the show now in its 37th season (renewed through season 40), Springfield’s appeal shows no signs of slowing down.
Fans may have two years to wait, but one thing’s for sure: whether it’s more doughnut disasters, apocalyptic satire, or Springfield’s weirdest adventure yet, the Simpsons’ second outing is bound to give us something worth quoting for another two decades.
