Hugh Jackman has opened up about the emotional impact of his latest role opposite Kate Hudson in the upcoming film Song Sung Blue, directed by Craig Brewer and set for release on 31 December. Speaking to The Australian, the 57-year-old actor explained that the story mirrors many of the real highs and lows people experience in long-term relationships.

“You obviously see people fall in love, but a large part of this film is about the ups and downs, the trials, the suffering, the joys, the victories, the defeats that people go through — and how, through all of that, they can stay connected,” Jackman said.

Jackman, who divorced Deborra-Lee Furness two years ago after 27 years of marriage, said parts of the film resonated deeply with his personal life. That connection, he revealed, was strengthened by a piece of advice his therapist repeated to him as he navigated the separation.

“My therapist often insists that in every relationship, love is defined by harmony, discord and repair — on both a small and large scale,” the actor explained. And for Jackman, it is the final part that matters most. “Love really lives in the repair — that’s where real love is built, and I think this film shows that,” he added. The actor — once named People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2008 — said the message helped him understand how relationships evolve.

While preparing to take on the role of Robin Hood in Michael Sarnoski’s upcoming film The Death of Robin Hood, Jackman also reflected on his own view of what love means after a long marriage. “I think you want the best for that person, even if it’s not necessarily what you want,” he said. “You still want the best for them. And you support them on their path, even when it’s difficult.”

Jackman recently confirmed he is now in a relationship with Sutton Foster, the American actress and singer he previously starred alongside in the Broadway production of The Music Man. The couple made their relationship public on the red carpet at the premiere of Song Sung Blue, appearing together and sharing a warm embrace.

The actor has also been openly supportive of Foster’s work, frequently sharing clips of her stage performances on his Instagram and praising his “magical” partner.

For fans, particularly in Ireland where Jackman has long enjoyed a strong following, the actor’s reflections mark a rare personal insight into how he has rebuilt his life in the years since his divorce. His comments suggest a man intent on moving forward with openness, optimism and a renewed understanding of what long-term love demands — and what it can survive.
