Shane Lowry is set to defend his Irish Open title in 2027, with the prestigious tournament moving to an earlier date in the golfing calendar. The event at the K Club in County Kildare will take place from 1 to 4 July, a significant change from the September slot it has occupied in recent years.
The decision to move the tournament is largely due to the Ryder Cup, which will be hosted at Adare Manor from 17 to 19 September 2027. As a result, the Irish Open has been brought forward and will become the opening event of the DP World Tour’s new ‘Closing Swing’ series.
The new July date could also increase the tournament’s appeal to some of the world’s leading golfers. With the Irish Open scheduled just two weeks before the Open Championship at St Andrews, the K Club event could provide an ideal opportunity for players to prepare for the final major of the season. The tournament may therefore attract a stronger international field as competitors look to fine-tune their game ahead of the Open.
There will also be several changes to the wider DP World Tour schedule for 2027. A number of tournaments are returning to the calendar, including the Hong Kong Open and the Deutsche Bank Singapore Open, both of which are co-sanctioned with the Asian Tour. The Open de Portugal|Cascais-Lisboa is also making a return after last being played in 2020.
Other major changes have been made to accommodate the Ryder Cup. The FedEx Open de France will be held from 9 to 12 September, while the BMW PGA Championship will take place from 23 to 26 September.
The Irish Open has enjoyed a strong run of home success in recent years. Lowry secured a remarkable victory at Doonbeg last weekend, winning by a record 11 strokes to claim the title. His success followed Rory McIlroy’s triumph at the K Club in 2025, meaning Irish players have won the national championship in each of the past two seasons.
With Lowry expected to return to defend his crown, the 2027 Irish Open promises to be a major highlight of the summer golfing calendar.
